Creating contentment (santosa)

There is no greater misery than not feeling content.                           Tao Te Ching

Conversely, there is no greater joy than feeling content. When one feels that one has and is all one can possibly have and be in that very moment, then all desires fall away and inner peace dawns. This is true wealth.

According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, as explained by Swami Venkatesananda, "In order to practise contentment one has to be aware of the arising of discontent all the time. " In our society, ambition is highly regarded as a key to success and prosperity. He explains that, "It is work that brings success and prosperity. Ambition often acts as a distracting influence which dissipates one's energies while contentment turns you within and preserves your energies." Then one is even more focussed, has more enthusiasm and more energy for the work which needs to be done.

But how to achieve contentment? Swami Venkatesananda says "Do not try to cultivate it, watch to see if it is there in you. If it is there you are heading in the right direction; if it is not there, something is wrong somewhere else." The first five limbs of Yoga, as explained in the Yoga Sutras, create an environment in which contentment can blossom. They are non-violence, truthfulness, not stealing, constantly turning the mind towards the Infinite, and non-greed.

May you and all beings experience deep contentment.

Recipe: Fresh tomato & radish salsa

4 medium tomatoes

chop finely

1 small red onion

dice finely

1 bunch of radishes

slice

1 small green chilli

chop finely

Juice of 1 lime

Pinch of ground dried cumin

salt

Small handful coriander leaves

Mix all ingredients together.

Serve as an accompaniment to enliven any meal.

Luscious limes
For a delicious appetite stimulant before any meal, squeeze a few drops of lime juice into a small amount of grated fresh ginger, sprinkle with a pinch of salt. With summer in full swing, dehydration can be caused by overexertion, too much sun, or fluid loss. Rather than reaching for drinks loaded with high fructose corn syrup and artificial colorings, choose a natural electrolyte replacement drink or make your own. One Ayurvedic recipe is: one quart pure water, juice from two fresh limes, lemons, or one orange, 1 teaspoon of unrefined sugar and 1 teaspoon of sea or rock salt.

For external use, lime juice is deep cleansing, refreshing and stimulating. It is also known for its cooling effect on the body and acts as a muscle relaxant. Lime is much used in cosmetics for its natural deodorising properties.
